What is a diagnostic evaluation? A parent’s guide

Parents usually come to an evaluation looking for answers — about learning, development, autism, dyslexia, attention, communication, behavior, or school planning. A good evaluation helps you understand what is getting in the way, and what may help your child move forward.

When an evaluation helps

An evaluation may be worth considering when a child is struggling in school, not meeting developmental milestones, having difficulty communicating, showing signs of autism, experiencing anxiety, falling behind in reading or writing — or when documentation is needed for school planning, ESA services, therapy, accommodations, or special-education consideration.

“When we understand the whole child, the next step becomes clearer.”

Kinds of evaluations we provide

  • Autism evaluations — social communication, developmental history, play, language, and daily functioning.
  • Educational evaluations — learning strengths and weaknesses in reading, writing, math, and academic processing.
  • Dyslexia & literacy evaluations — decoding, phonological processing, fluency, spelling, and comprehension.
  • Speech & language evaluations — receptive and expressive language, articulation, social communication, and AAC needs.
  • Psychological evaluations — cognitive functioning, attention, executive functioning, behavior, anxiety, and adaptive skills.

What you walk away with

Our reports are written to be useful, not just technical. We explain what the results mean, how your child’s needs may show up in daily life and school, and what supports we recommend — therapy, academic intervention, classroom accommodations, parent strategies, or referrals. The goal is never to label a child; it’s to understand their strengths and needs well enough to choose the right next step.
